The book of 2 Kings is a sad book to read. It is the account of how Israel slid onto exile because of their unfaithfulness to God. Israel had very few faithful or righteous kings, but when they did rise, it only delayed their exile for a short time.
Josiah was one of these kings. As soon as he was on the throne he (Chapter 23) he immediately began to tear down the idols and tools of worship devoted to other gods.
Household gods.
We are not told what these entailed. I picture little wooden idols sitting on the coffee table or hung on the wall. imagine a table in the corner dedicated to burning incense to these strange gods. Whatever they were, it made me curious about household gods that exist in my home today.
Initially a variety of things came to mind: my cellphone, my computer, the television, and food. What stood out to me the most was peace and quiet came to my mind as a god. I love peace and quiet. I look forward to a home without chaos. I got very little of it in a home of violence and I had made it my mission to create this, but there was a problem.
The lack of peace and quiet led me to believe that God was not present in the loudness and chaos. It caused me to miss His presence, what He wanted to say or to even build a relationship with me. Peace and quiet are beautiful, but it is not the environment that is peace and quiet it is my heart that has peace and quiet. Certainly the environment does not determine if the Lord is there or not.
So what about you?

- What “household gods” are getting in the way of the most important relationship?
