Can I Trust God?

Some people would look at this title and thing, well yeah, but have you ever asked this very serious question? We know we can not trust satan or the world, but can we trust God? HOw can we know God really has our best intentions at heart?

Let us look at why we distrust God. The overwhelming reason we distruct God is because we impute our character or humanity in general, on Him. If God is like me, it is quite logical not to trust Him. We are very accustomed to trusting ourselves, but part of our transformation begins when we start trusting God with everything! The only way to build that trust is by getting to know who He is through His Word, prayer, and community with other believers.

We are from God. Anyone who knows God listens to us; anyone who is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of deception.
1 John 4:6

We can not always trust the humans we love, so how is God’s love different?

What if we defined love as something all together different? What if we defined it as: doing what is in someone’s best interest?

WHat if God can only do what is best for me?

This does not mean that it is always what I want! This does not always mean it is what I think is best or desire. I would like to win the lottery, but God knows what is best, and it may be in His will to not win the lottery.

Think of it like in this analogy. You are a parent of a three year old. Right before dinner, your three year old wants candy. As the parent, you know the child will not want to eat all their veggies and drink their milk and say no. The child screams and wails, believing the parents does not love them. Or a child runs out into the middle of the road to chase a ball, but you stop them before they can step on the street. As a parent, you know things the child does not know. They could not see the on coming car, but you could.

This begs the question: Does God really know things we do not know? Can God see the bigger picture of our lives? Does GOd have a plan for us that is bigger than we can fathom?

18 But look, the Lord keeps his eye on those who fear him—
those who depend on his faithful love

19 to rescue them from death
and to keep them alive in famine.

20 We wait for the Lord;
he is our help and shield.
21 For our hearts rejoice in him
because we trust in his holy name.

Psalm 33:18-21

4 I sought the Lord, and he answered me
and rescued me from all my fears.

Those who look to him are radiant with joy;
their faces will never be ashamed.

This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him
and saved him from all his troubles.
The angel of the Lord encamps
around those who fear him, and rescues them.
Taste and see that the Lord is good.
How happy is the person who takes refuge in him!
Psalm 34:4-8

11 For I know the plans I have for you”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“plans for your well-being, not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11

Scripture tells us over and over that He is faithful and totally trustworthy. God is dependable! God can do no wrong! God loves us more than we are capable of fathoming! He created the world, knows everything and has control over everything. He is sovereign!

The result should be to trust God in my decision making process. When we experience God in the process of trusting Him, the greatest step is to ask Him to totally manage our lives, making Him Lord, not just a Savior. He knows things I do not know.

What keeps us from making this decision?

The enemy wants me to be afraid that God will take advantage of me:

  1. What is God going to ask me to do, or not do?
  2. What will he keep me from doing that I want to do?
  3. What will he take away from me that I think is important?
  4. Will God fail me if I trust Him with “this?”

Re-read the verses above from Psalms. Does that sound like someone who desires to use you in a deceptive and manipulative way? Does God character speak that He is going to take advantage of you? What is God speaking to you today about His character?

Consider this: if God loves me completely, unselfishly, and extravagantly and can only do what is best for me, what LOGICAL reason do you have for not giving Him control and management of your life?

28 We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28
