2 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery. Exodus 20:2
This is one of my favorite verses in all of scripture. The LORD your God. God says I am yours. This scripture comes right before the 10 Commandments of the Lord are given. I think it is very important because God did not start out with the thou shalt nots. Instead He said I am your God.
The word LORD is translated Yahweh, which in turns means I AM. This name of the Lord shows He is eternal, all powerful, and the ultimate reality. This makes the next two words incredible: your God. This puts a great emphasis on mine. Our all powerful God becomes very personal to us and choses to dwell with His people.
Not only does God chose to dwell with His people, but He has rescued all of His people from Egypt. IN God’s Word, Egypt represents our fallen world. Until God rescues us, we are slaves to unrighteousness and live in bondage to the world. God is a God who rescues His people. He saves us from slavery to son and death through Jesus.
God makes something very clear to us, He rules over us and He is a good ruler. Physically, the Israelites were ruled over by Pharoah. In the world, we are ruled over by Satan, the prince of the world. Many times we slip away and return to our bondage and slavery, but God is a GOOD GOD and will continually rescue us time and time again.
The 10 Commandments reveal not only is Godholy, but He is the only one who can make us holy. We are sinners unable to meet the standard of God’s Law. In Christ, we find the ONLY rescue from sin and death.
AS we spend the next coming days talking about each commandment, what do they reveal about the character of God?
How do they point us to our need for a Savior?
16 for it is written, Be holy, because I am holy. 1 Peter 1:16
5 Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, “Israel, listen to the statutes and ordinances I am proclaiming as you hear them today. Learn and follow them carefully. 2 The Lord our God made a covenant with us at Horeb. 3 He did not make this covenant with our ancestors, but with all of us who are alive here today. 4 The Lord spoke to you face to face from the fire on the mountain. 5 At that time I was standing between the Lord and you to report the word of the Lord to you, because you were afraid of the fire and did not go up the mountain. And he said: 6 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery. Deuteronomy 5:1-6
22 But now, since you have been set free from sin and have become enslaved to God, you have your fruit, which results in sanctification—and the outcome is eternal life! 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
