We read in the book of Genesis, the ancient and sacred creation narrative. We read:
“Both the man and his wife were naked, yet felt no shame.”

I am in awe of creation. I try to imagine how it all went down. I think a how perfect everything must have been. Perfect weather. Perfect environment and balance of of the environment. A man and a woman joined in perfect unity. No relational issues. Just a perfect union as God originally had designed. Neither of them was afraid of being exposed or exploited. They were not intimidated, a very, jealous, judgmental, or suspicious of the other. There was never a moment of self consciousness, self absorption, or self righteousness. They were prefect. They saw each other as perfect.
In split second, things go horribly wrong. Adam and Eve did the unthinkable. They rebelled together. They sinned against God together.
God graciously comes to the couple in the cool of the day. Can you imagine! Having afternoon walks with God? To be able to fellowship face to face? Can you imagine the anticipation and delight of experiencing waking with our Heavenly Father?
Except this time, it was different. Tragically God asks a very heart breaking question, Where are you?
These three words are more of a statement than a question. God knew where they were. God knew what they had done. Where were Adam and Eve? They were hiding and God knew why.
This is the catastrophic birth of shame.
“Where can I go to escape your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there. If I fly on the wings of the dawn and settle down on the western horizon, even there your hand will lead me; your right hand will hold on to me. If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me, and the light around me will be night” — even the darkness is not dark to you. The night shines like the day; darkness and light are alike to you.”
Psalms 139:7-12 CSB
There are times we ask the same question: where are you God?
This psalm assures us that there is no place we can go that God is not present. There is no situation He is not in the middle of.
Today, reflect upon Psalm 139. Are you trying to hide yourself from God? If so, what are you trying to hide from Him?
