One of the greatest, among so many, discoveries in my relationship with God was learning to hear and walk with the Holy Spirit. He had always been there since I was saved, but I did not know until 20 years What or who the Holy Spirit was. I was aware of the Trinity, but did not understand how the Holy Spirit worked or spoke.
I would suppose if I could explain it to you all perfectly, the everyone would be walking and listening to the Holy Spirit. It is like building a solid relationship with God. If I had perfect instructions, everyone would be doing it. It is unique and personal to only you. Our journeys are our own. No one relationship is the same as another. It is a unique experience.
To walk in the Spirit is to obey the initial promptings of the Spirit.
Who do you turn to daily for guidance on living or decisions that need to be made? Do you depend upon yourself? Or do you depend upon the Holy Spirit?
Scripture tells us over and over again that the only Guide worth trusting is the Holy Spirit. He knows our past. He knows the future. He knows God’s plan and purpose for our lives. He knows what is good for us and what is right for us.
Jesus repeatedly called the Spirit, the Spirit of Truth. Jesus said:
“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth. For he will not speak on his own, but he will speak whatever he hears. He will also declare to you what is to come.”
John 16:13 CSB
Guide. Speak. Declare.
It’s the Spirit of Truth that points us toward what Jesus says or is doing in any given moment. We get this idea that we wished we could have walked with Jesus when he was here on earth, but the truth is, he’s walking in Spirit with you already! He dwells within you! He is always there with you! You do not need to wait on Him to come, or schedule an appointment with Him. He is thee with you right now.
God wants us to know what to do, when to do it, and that we can trust His Spirit to be our guide. How do we gain access to the Spirit? There are conditions and these conditions are what I did not understand.
First, we must be and stay yielded to the Spirit. you do not get to be half in and half out. You must be completely surrendered to the Spirit. We must say yes when He prompts us to take a certain action or speak a certain word. We must give mental assent to the Spirit’s direction. Then as James tells us, we must go do.
Second, we must believe His guidance. This is my struggle. I test the “spirits” so much because I do not want to be led astray by any sort of demon anything. We have to pay special attention that we are tuning our ears into what the Holy Spirit is speaking. If we are looking for Him we will hear Him.
“Now without faith it is impossible to please God, since the one who draws near to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.”
Hebrews 11:6 CSB
Hebrews tells us that God rewards those who seek Him. We need to be diligent in seeking His guidance, asking for it, and watching for it, anticipating it, and receiving it.
The Holy Spirit has come to speak truth to us. He does it through the Word of God. Nothing the Holy Spirit says will contradict God’s Word. He repeats what he hears in heaven from God. He is all of the power of God in us, to guide us, correct us, and to I,part what we need to know in order to live in obedience and faithful lives. Trust Him to guide you today, tomorrow and always.
