13 He is the one who will build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
2 Samuel 7:13
God Keeps His promises.
Say that again to yourself. God KEEPS HIS PROMISES!
In the Old Testament, God made several promises, or covenants, with His people — Adam, Noah, Abraham, the Israelites, and David to name a few.
David.
David’s journey was an interesting and colorful rollercoaster ride. From the modest of upbringings as a shepherd boy to the courageous Israelite who took down a giant. He spent a good amount of his life on the run from a jealous wicked king whom he refused to slay. When the crown was finally placed on his head, at the peak of his reign, he became a murderer and adulterer. He was a king who allowed dysfunction in his home that eventually led his son to rebel against the throne and sent a domino effect ending the life of each of his son.
David bravely navigated the daunting gauntlet of life, a true warrior of faith. Today, we revere him as the man after God’s own heart, a shining beacon of unwavering devotion. With fiery passion, he shows what it means to love the Lord deeply. Through his own fervent words, he crafted countless beautiful and evocative Psalms. These Psalms continue to resonate with our souls.
David encountered many trials and tribulations along his incredible journey. Yet, not once do we see God turning His back on him. God never withdrew His favor. David had unwavering faith. He patiently awaited the promises of the Lord. He held fiercely to the expectation that all God declared would come to pass in His perfect timing. In the pages of 2 Samuel, we uncover the greatest promise ever given to David. It is a testament to his unshakeable faith and the divine plan set in motion.
David yearned to construct a magnificent temple for the Lord—a majestic house where the Divine could reside among His people. Yet, the Almighty had a different vision. Why, you ask? God revealed to David that the weight of blood stained his hands. This disqualified him from building a sanctuary for the Most High. However, from the lineage of David, the Lord made an extraordinary promise. Through his very seed, He vowed to establish an everlasting kingdom. This kingdom would endure through Eternity.
“‘The Lord declares to you: The Lord himself will make a house for you. 12 When your time comes and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up after you your descendant, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He is the one who will build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will discipline him with a rod of men and blows from mortals. 15 But my faithful love will never leave him as it did when I removed it from Saul, whom I removed from before you. 16 Your house and kingdom will endure before me forever, and your throne will be established forever.’”
2 Samuel 7:12-16
Today’s scripture in 2 Samuel 7 echoes the awe-inspiring promise of the Messiah! It speaks of the seed of Abraham—the one through whom all nations would be abundantly blessed. With undeniable clarity, God bestowed a magnificent promise upon David, declaring that a Savior would emerge from his lineage. Just as the Abrahamic covenant assured, the time for mankind’s redemption is drawing near. God’s plan of salvation is unfolding before our very eyes!
Can you feel the weight of being David? Picture this profound moment when Nathan, a messenger from the Lord, delivers words that echo through eternity! The God of the universe knows every secret. He hears every heartbeat from beginning to end. He boldly proclaims that David’s lineage will reign forever! This isn’t just a promise; it’s a divine legacy like no other! A thousand years later, David had passed away. In the fullness of time, the world witnessed the glorious fulfillment of this promise. Jesus of Nazareth, the long-awaited King of kings, has arrived!
We learn from both Matthew and Luke that Jesus was heir to the throne. Matthew traces Jesus’ legal claim through his stepfather, Joseph (Matthew 1:6-16). Luke traces Jesus’ genetic connection to David through Mary (Luke 3:23-31). Mary is not mentioned, but most scholars maintain that Heli was Mary’s father. Joseph is mentioned because he is Jesus’ earthy father and genealogy only mentions males. We can go as far as to say that Jesus was twice from David’s line.
Of course, Jesus elevated David’s rule to a breathtaking pinnacle! He is not just any fleeting king like those who came before. He is the King of kings and the Lord of lords (Revelation 19:16)! Christ’s kingdom stretches across the entire universe, for all things were crafted by Him and for Him (Colossians 1:16)! Since He has conquered death and risen again, His reign will NEVER end (Romans 6:9)!
Through the breathtaking and glorious realities of who Jesus is and what He has accomplished, the awe-inspiring promise to David has been triumphantly fulfilled! David’s throne stands unshakably established for all eternity. His divine power has been magnificently passed down through the generations to the eternal Christ! No earthly legacy, no matter how grand, can even begin to compare with this extraordinary truth!
What promises of God do you rest on? How have you seen these fulfilled in your life? Today we reflect upon Philippians 4:19:
19 And my God will supply all your needs according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:19
