12 When I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, make every effort to come to me in Nicopolis, because I have decided to spend the winter there. 13 Diligently help Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their journey, so that they will lack nothing. 14 Let our people learn to devote themselves to good works for pressing needs, so that they will not be unfruitful.

Titus 3:12-14

For every Paul, Peter, David, or Moses in the Bible, there are countless Tychicuses and Artemases. These are unsung heroes who tirelessly serve in the shadows! At first glance, one might dismiss this passage as mundane, lacking in depth. Yet, upon closer examination, it offers us a thrilling glimpse into the inner workings of Paul’s vibrant ministry. The vital truth we must embrace is that Paul was never alone in this journey. He was not a solitary figure; he couldn’t possibly carry the weight of such an impactful ministry by himself. God’s magnificent design for the church has never been about a single alpha leader reigning supreme!

1 Corinthians 12 passionately reveals that God masterfully crafted the church to function like a body. He bestowed each member with unique gifts. These gifts help them fulfill their vital roles. Even the mighty “Paul the Great” required uplifting support! He relied on fervent prayer warriors. They helped carry the immense load of interceding for churches and souls scattered across the vast Roman Empire. In his darkest moments, he was in desperate need of devoted companions. They stood beside him, praying. They encouraged him through the trials and tribulations. Paul’s monumental achievements could never have materialized without these incredible individuals to uplift, support, and collaborate with him. Without them, he would have surely been overwhelmed and burned out long before his mission was realized.

Moses understood, over a thousand years ago, that he could not bear the immense weight of ministry alone. (See Numbers 11:11-17.) In response to his heartfelt plea, God blessed Moses with the essential support he longed for. Each of us requires the iron of other believers to sharpen us in our spiritual journeys. We must cultivate humility and an eagerness to learn, opening ourselves to the much-needed encouragement from those around us. Moreover, we have a duty to joyfully provide support. We must lift others up to ensure that no one becomes dull in their faith journey!

You might assume that the only solitude Paul would experience would be within the cold, unforgiving walls of a prison. Yet, paradoxically, even at his lowest, he was surrounded by an incredible band of brothers. They rallied around him with unwavering support. What profound lessons can we glean from this remarkable bond? These courageous individuals took significant risks to stand by a man branded as a “criminal” by society. There was no financial incentive, no fame to be gained—only a heartfelt commitment to uplift one another. They poured their time and energy into empowering Paul, and their devotion speaks volumes. Let’s delve deeper into the lives of these eight inspiring souls who dared to make a difference!

Artemas – Unknown except for this one mention.

Tychicus – The Man with the Servant’s Heart.

  • Mentioned five times in the NT
  • He was going to travel with Paul to Jerusalem (1 Cor 16:1-9).
  • He was going to deliver this letter to the Colossians.
  • He delivered the letter of Ephesians (Ephesians 6:21) and probably Philemon.
  • Beloved brother
  • Fellow bond-servant
  • A faithful steward of the ministry (1 Cor 4:2)
  • An encourager

Zenas the lawyer – a remarkable but fleeting figure in Scripture, yet his impact resonates deeply! He stood as a vital member of Paul’s team. Perhaps he used his legal prowess to champion the cause of believers facing persecution for their faith. It is a powerful reminder. Each one of us is called to utilize our unique skills, resources, and gifts. We are meant to fervently serve within the body of Christ!

Apollos –

  • He is mentioned ten times in the Bible.
  • He first preached the gospel from John the Baptist. Later, he was corrected by Priscilla and Aquila and came to personal faith in Jesus.
  • He was a powerful speaker and mighty in the Scriptures (Acts 19:1).
  • Served faithfully in the church in Corinth (Acts 19:1, 1 Corinthians 1:12, 1 Corinthians 3)

Let our people learn to devote themselves to good works…not unfruitful

This is the second time Paul used this exact phrase, “devote…to good works,” in this passage. What is the significance of the word “devote”? To be devoted means to commit fully and earnestly to an endeavor, reflecting a deep sense of purpose and dedication. In the context of good works, it suggests that our actions should come from a sincere intention. We should aim to help others and contribute positively to our communities. What are some practical ways you can devote yourselves to good deeds? Ideas could include volunteering at local shelters or organizing community clean-up days. Participating in mentoring programs for youth is another option. You could even simply offer a helping hand to a neighbor in need. Each of these actions embodies the essence of devotion to good works. They encourage individual growth. They also foster a spirit of cooperation and compassion among all members of society.
