3 As I urged you when I went to Macedonia, remain in Ephesus so that you may instruct certain people not to teach false doctrine 4 or to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies. These promote empty speculations rather than God’s plan, which operates by faith. 5 Now the goal of our instruction is love that comes from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith. 6 Some have departed from these and turned aside to fruitless discussion. 7 They want to be teachers of the law, although they don’t understand what they are saying or what they are insisting on. 8 But we know that the law is good, provided one uses it legitimately. 9 We know that the law is not meant for a righteous person, but for the lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinful, for the unholy and irreverent, for those who kill their fathers and mothers, for murderers, 10 for the sexually immoral and males who have sex with males, for slave traders, liars, perjurers, and for whatever else is contrary to the sound teaching 11 that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which was entrusted to me.
1 Timothy 1:3-11
that you may instruct certain people not to teach false doctrine
A crucial theme pulsates through Paul’s heartfelt letter to Timothy. There is an unwavering commitment to the purity of doctrine! Paul’s deep concern for the truth is evident. He entrusts Timothy with the monumental responsibility of safeguarding the sacred teachings within the church. Timothy is also tasked with courageously correcting those who wander off the path. The “false doctrines” are not explicitly named in this passage. Nonetheless, they encompass any teachings that threaten the clear, profound meaning of Scripture. Those who are firmly rooted in the truth will instantly recognize what deviates from the divine message!
Leaders of the church, and indeed all believers, cannot stand idly by while falsehood masquerades as truth! Every believer has a sacred responsibility. They must ensure that teachings within their church, Sunday School classes, and Bible study groups are rooted in Biblical soundness. This duty is especially critical for leaders who are entrusted with the care of the flock. Yes, confronting those who propagate erroneous teachings may feel awkward or uncomfortable, but it is absolutely essential!
to myths and endless genealogies
Paul tantalizingly refrains from specifying what these topics are, leaving us to ponder the implications. Investing our energy in deciphering his intentions means indulging in the speculation he cautions Timothy—and by extension, these men—against. While such matters might pique our curiosity, they are largely devoid of spiritual value. In our digital age, they may even serve as irresistible clickbait. They draw attention without nurturing our souls or deepening our relationship with God. Ultimately, these discussions yield no genuine transformation or practical benefits. Instead, seeking answers to questions absent from Scripture could easily lead us down this unproductive path.
These are a few examples of pointless debates. We cannot know the answer to these questions now. And speculating can lead to arguments and disunity. Even when speculation does not lead to these outcomes, it still is a waste of time.
Challenge yourself with a powerful inquiry before diving into a debate or seeking an answer to a question. Ask yourself, “What difference does it make?” If discovering the answer holds no sway over your everyday life, then let it go. There’s no actionable insight for you to embrace or transform. It’s crucial to prioritize what truly impacts your journey; otherwise, it’s merely a distraction not worth your precious time.
8 Finally brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable—if there is any moral excellence and if there is anything praiseworthy—dwell on these things.
Philippians 4:8
These promote empty speculations rather than God’s plan, which operates by faith
This phrase stands in stark contrast to the empty myths and wild speculations that abound. Before we dive into these discussions, I want to pose a vital question. “Does this truly advance the glorious administration of God?” In simpler terms, ask yourself, “Is this contributing to the magnificent building of God’s kingdom?”
the goal of our instruction
While misguided teachers may dwell in endless “what is the point of this?” debates, true believers must uphold a singular, fervent goal. Our mission is to ignite a love for others, pursue holiness, and cultivate an unwavering faith. Consider how far removed from this ideal some preachers or teachers might stray with their misguided (or at best, incomplete) objectives:
- To solicit donations.
- To show off their knowledge of Greek, Hebrew, Bible history, etc.
- To be commended and applauded for their teaching and sermon.
- To share a new angle of the text that has not been considered before.
- To make people comfortable.
- To build up a “fan” following.
- To generate name recognition.
- To purely impart knowledge and doctrine.
As Paul passionately expressed in 1 Corinthians 13, without love, we are but a hollow echo in this world. The vibrant triad of Christian living revolves around love, faith, and hope. We fervently anticipate the glorious fulfillment of God’s promises, unwavering in our faith in Him. We cling to hope and steadfast faith. By doing so, we demonstrate our obedience to God. We embrace His love and share it with everyone around us.
14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but does not have works? Can such faith save him?
James 2:14
James boldly proclaimed, “faith without works is dead,” reminding us that our actions must reflect our beliefs.
8 Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know that “we all have knowledge.” Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.
1 Corinthians 8:1
In 1 Corinthians 8:1, we discover a profound truth: “Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.” This powerful statement highlights that genuine wisdom is not just about what we know; it’s about lifting others higher! The heart of every lesson should spark a fire of application within us, igniting our very souls. If a teaching lacks practical significance, it has no place in our hearts! Sometimes, that application calls us to transform our very attitude toward God. It fosters humility. It nurtures a deeper sense of gratitude. This exhilarating journey of application knows no bounds! Every impactful teaching moment should have a powerful response. This response should be actionable. We can embrace it and live it out with fervor!
Those who possess greater knowledge will face a more rigorous judgment. Let that knowledge ignite a fervent drive for action!
Some have departed
Someone who leaves the profound path of application-oriented teaching, anchored in love and faith, gets caught in conversations that lead nowhere. These discussions may be overflowing with words. However, they lack substance. They are barren of the Spirit’s transformative conviction and life-giving power. It is essential, too, to refrain from speaking on matters that remain beyond one’s comprehension.
28 Even a fool is considered wise when he keeps silent—
discerning, when he seals his lips.Proverbs 17:28
3 Not many should become teachers, my brothers, because you know that we will receive a stricter judgment.
James 3:1
If you find yourself teaching a study, you might face a question you can’t answer. Don’t hesitate to proclaim, “I don’t know.” It’s essential to avoid making bold assertions about what you aren’t certain of. The crowds marveled at the way Jesus conveyed His message with unparalleled authority, and it’s no wonder—He knows everything! But we, as imperfect beings, must recognize our limitations and not attempt to replicate that level of authority. It’s a vital and enriching practice to acknowledge the various interpretations and perspectives surrounding a doctrine during your teaching. Share your personal viewpoints while clearly stating that they are just that—your opinions. Embrace words like “likely,” “probably,” and “I think” instead of claiming “always” or “I know.” This approach fosters an atmosphere of humility and sincerity, enriching the learning experience for everyone involved.
law is not meant for a righteous person
This refers to the profound truths of the Old Testament law! It is not only good but incredibly useful! However, it is vital that we grasp and convey its essence in the right manner. Paul passionately expounded on the Law and its significance for New Testament believers, highlighting its powerful role. One of its most crucial purposes is to serve as a mirror, exposing the sins and flaws in our lives. In doing so, it reveals the stark reality of our lostness and the desperate need we have for a Savior!
Whatever part of the Bible you teach, ensure that you fervently “accurately divide the words of truth.” God’s Word is profoundly important, a sacred gift we must handle with the utmost reverence. We cannot, and must not, distort its message to fit our desires. Instead, we must approach it with a humble heart, free from any preconceptions or bias. Accurately interpreting these divine truths demands deep respect and meticulous care—qualities that, regrettably, these men lacked.
that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which was entrusted to me
Just as Paul was entrusted with the magnificent gospel, so are we! Imagine if your friend, in his trust, hands over his beloved children to your care. He embarks on a journey with his wife, and you would fiercely guard and protect those innocent lives. The same profound responsibility applies if he entrusts you with a priceless musical instrument. It also applies to a rare collector’s edition board game or an irreplaceable antique. The gospel, however, transcends all earthly treasures—it is infinitely more valuable! This sacred trust is twofold. First, we must zealously safeguard the purity of the gospel. It proclaims salvation by grace through faith. Secondly, we are called to share this incredible gift; we cannot keep it confined to ourselves!
