1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope:
2 To Timothy, my true son in the faith.
Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
1 Timothy 1:1-2
Paul stresses his apostleship
In nearly every one of his epistles, Paul fervently declares his apostleship. He does this not to boast or seek glory. Instead, it is a profound declaration of his divine calling, the “commandment of God.” He emphasizes his role not merely as a title. It is a clarion call for his readers to heed the vital teachings within. He stands as God’s chosen messenger. Timothy is aware of their deep bond and Paul’s authority. He may find the reminder superfluous. Yet, Paul senses that this letter is destined for a wider audience. Paul seems to realize that his words will reach beyond their friendship. This reinforces the imperative for Timothy. Despite their familiarity, Timothy must honor the sacred authority bestowed upon him by God.
Paul views Timothy as his son
Paul may have been single and childless in the traditional sense. Yet, he was a father figure to many. His heart overflowed with love and guidance for them. Timothy, one of his spiritual children, shared an undeniably deep bond with him, rich with affection and mutual respect.
4 “Listen, Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. 6 These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart. 7 Repeat them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Bind them as a sign on your hand and let them be a symbol on your forehead. 9 Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your city gates.
Deuteronomy 6:4-9
Moses urges the Israelites to instill God’s commands in the hearts of the next generation. He reminds us that the call to nurture and teach transcends biological ties. Those without children of their own are equally bound to carry this sacred responsibility. They ignite the flame of faith in the lives of others.
Every believer has a fervent responsibility. Whether married or single, they must boldly pass God’s words on to the next generation! Through vibrant discipleship, those without families of their own can joyously expand God’s family. They can revel in the profound benefits of His kingdom. Discipleship provides a powerful way to express deep-seated feelings of fatherhood or motherhood. It also allows one to contribute to the glorious work of God! So, if you find yourself single, cast aside the discouraging thoughts. Do not think, “I will never have a family of my own.” Instead, pour your heart into discipleship. You may find yourself nurturing far more spiritual children. This could be even more than the most prolific physical parents ever could! These cherished spiritual children will stand beside you for eternity, worshiping the Lamb with unending joy!
