6 In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers and sisters, to keep away from every believer who is idle and disruptive and does not live according to the teaching you received from us. 7 For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example. We were not idle when we were with you, 8 nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. 9 We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to offer ourselves as a model for you to imitate. 10 For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.”
11 We hear that some among you are idle and disruptive. They are not busy; they are busybodies. 12 Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the food they eat. 13 And as for you, brothers and sisters, never tire of doing what is good.
14 Take special note of anyone who does not obey our instruction in this letter. Do not associate with them, in order that they may feel ashamed. 15 Yet do not regard them as an enemy, but warn them as you would a fellow believer.
2 Thessalonians 3:6-15
we command you
These two powerful letters reveal Paul’s fervent efforts. He uplifts the Thessalonians with profound encouragement. He also provides heartfelt reminders. Yet, in this moment, he boldly delivers a handful of direct commands that resonate deep within their souls. From this, we can uncover several vital principles that stir our spirits and guide our journey forward:
- Paul possessed the undeniable authority to command. Just because he didn’t wield that power constantly, it in no way diminished his rightful command over it.
- In countless instances, it is far more powerful for leaders to use tools of encouragement. They should offer heartfelt reminders and inspiring testimonies. Authentic sharing and even passionate pleading are more effective than barking commands indiscriminately.
- Using commands sparingly will amplify their impact, making each command a powerful call to action that resonates with intensity!
- Just because you hold a position of authority doesn’t mean you must wield it recklessly! For instance, husbands should resist the temptation to frequently play the “you should submit to me” card with their wives. Yes, there may be rare moments where it is necessary. However, overusing this tactic robs it of its power and beauty. This reduces it to a mere shadow of what it could be!
It is a leader’s sacred duty to nurture the hearts of their people with unwavering passion. Before issuing commands, take a moment to deeply reflect. Is this truly the most compassionate path to uplift their spirits? Sometimes the answer may be a resounding yes. However, there are occasions that call for a more empathetic approach to illuminate their souls.
In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ
This is where Paul’s authority came from. He wasn’t self-anointed; his legitimacy was rooted in a divine appointment that set him apart from others. Christ appointed him and called him from a life of persecution. He became a pivotal figure in spreading the message of the Gospel. This transformational experience on the road to Damascus not only changed the course of his life. It also established the foundation of his authority as an apostle. He was specifically chosen to bear witness to the teachings of Jesus. He was meant to share the good news with both Jews and Gentiles alike. Through his unwavering commitment, Paul became a powerful instrument in the hands of Christ. He led many to faith and shaped the early Church in profound ways.
to keep away from every believer who is idle and disruptive and does not live according to the teaching
In Greek, the term for unruly here is “ä-tä’k-tōs.” This word resonates deeply with the notion of disorderliness. It is akin to a soldier tragically out of rank. It captures the spirit of those who indulge in excessive pleasure. It also depicts those who stray from the paths laid out by rules and order. The issue appears to have arisen from a misinterpretation of Paul’s fervent first letter. In it, he passionately spoke of the imminent day of the Lord. This led some to believe that this fateful day was just around the corner. With the thrilling prospect of Christ’s return hovering over them, they questioned the very purpose of working. Why toil when one could simply abandon their jobs and revel in the anticipation of what was to come?
Our sinful nature compels us to twist Scripture to cater to our own desires. Imagine a person entrenched in laziness. They succumb to the temptation of quitting their job to “pray, play, and wait” for Jesus’ return. This isn’t just a dilemma from Paul’s era; we still witness such behaviors today among those who call themselves believers. But what’s the real issue here? Among many issues, it is a disgraceful testimony to the unbelievers we encounter. It undermines the very truth we are supposed to represent.
Moreover, it stands in stark contrast to the very essence of what the apostles fervently taught and exemplified. Paul firmly declared that these individuals were straying from the sacred traditions he entrusted to them. To put it plainly, “During our time with you, did you ever see us simply indulging ourselves in carefree revelry? Absolutely not! We didn’t slink around, relying on your generosity. We toiled, and we toiled fiercely. Whatever actions— or inactions— are being exhibited by these individuals, they certainly didn’t learn them from us!”
Paul passionately commands that they steer clear of these individuals! It’s important to recognize that this letter was presented to the entire church. This presentation provided these brothers and sisters a precious opportunity to repent. Only those who stubbornly choose to ignore Paul’s vital instruction should be shunned. But why, you might ask, should they be avoided?
20 Walk with the wise and become wise,
for a companion of fools suffers harm.Proverbs 13:20
33 Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.”
1 Corinthians 15:33
If you associate with lazy individuals, it’s all too easy to slip into their lethargy. Yet, withdrawing from such company is an act of profound spiritual discipline! It serves as a reminder of the life of sin they lead. The Lord cannot accept this existence. He urges them towards transformation for their restoration. When believers cling stubbornly to their sins, and they mingle freely with everyone else, the church loses its power to deter sin. Cutting ties with these individuals vividly illustrates a fellowship that remains shattered until repentance takes place. Though it may appear harsh and uncaring at first glance, it is actually a powerful form of tough love. This form of love is essential for revealing the grave seriousness of sin!
Imagine a daring child who defiantly disobeys his parent and dashes into the bustling traffic. Miraculously, he emerges unscathed! In a whirlwind of joy, his father is overwhelmed with relief. He rushes out to buy a delectable ice cream for his adventurous little one. They embrace tightly, sharing hearty laughter, and the father presents the sweet treat with pride. However, the child remains blissfully unaware of the perilous nature of his actions. He relishes the special attention that’s now showered upon him. This delightful moment will undoubtedly compel him to seek that same thrill again and again. Alas, this reckless behavior could one day culminate in a grave accident. A sagacious parent must take charge, imposing discipline for the sake of the child’s future wellbeing.
11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.
Hebrews 12:11
Before you make the profound decision to distance yourself from believers, consider the vital steps you must embrace! Reflect deeply on your reasons, and explore the emotions that guide you in this journey. Understand the weight of the choice ahead, and let your heart lead you to clarity and conviction!
- They must be boldly confronted with their sin (Matthew 18:15-20). If we allow individuals to wander in ignorance, unaware of the reasons for our distance, what purpose does it serve? We owe it to them. It’s our responsibility to speak truthfully about the offenses that stand between us. We must do it passionately for the sake of our shared journey!
- The most transformative impact occurs when the entire church rallies together as one. If only a few individuals isolate this person, it will ultimately fall short of success. In fact, we risk fostering division among us. This must be a unified decision, one forged through collective agreement. The leadership plays a crucial role in this pivotal choice, guiding us to ensure harmony and strength in our community.
- It should only be done when the individual is clearly defying the sacred commands of Scripture. They must be fervently offered the chance to repent and return to the path of righteousness.
Paul’s model of ministry
As we delve into 1 Thessalonians, it becomes clear that being a model for fellow believers is not just commendable. It’s essential! We desperately need models to look up to. Through the power of modeling, the intricate truths of Scripture and doctrine come alive in our daily lives. They transform theory into tangible practice. It’s our heartfelt duty to strive to be exemplary models for others. We do this not for the sake of garnering followers or seeking our own glory. Instead, we passionately guide people toward Christ! In this profound passage, we witness Paul’s unwavering commitment to work as a model for us all.
Paul and his co-workers absolutely deserved to receive unwavering support. Just as the authority to lead is not something to be wielded without thought, the right to accept help is not either. Jesus, in His profound wisdom, instructed His disciples to embrace the generosity of the person of peace. He sent them out in pairs (see Luke 10). They were meant to settle in the home. They would enjoy the hospitality of the village as long as they remained there. This illustrates a powerful precedent for both embracing and forgoing support. Leaders must carefully assess each situation. This is not for their own gain. It is to ensure the utmost benefit for those they are called to serve.
Paul and his co-workers were hard workers. Those called to do ministry should follow their example by working hard. Unfortunately, some Christian workers are lazy. They don’t have a typical job or typical hours. They also do not have a boss who is always watching over their shoulder. Many Christian workers are self-motivated and work even much harder than they would in a 40-hour-a-week job.
But not all are truly dedicated. Unfortunately, some enter the so-called “ministry” because it seems like the easier path. They live far from their supporters and exploit the generosity of others. They indulge in a life of luxury. Alternatively, they simply shirk their responsibilities to Christ. I have encountered individuals who proudly label themselves as missionaries, living off the support of others. Yet, when probed about their ministry, it becomes painfully clear that they have not actually done anything meaningful for years. Between these two extremes lie the majority of Christian workers. Even with the best intentions, it’s all too easy for complacency to set in. Without adequate accountability, the temptations of our flesh can overpower our resolve, leading us astray from our calling.
How can one limit these temptations? How can Christian workers ensure that they are diligent and productive? How can this be applied even to those who are not supported by others or not in Christian ministry?
“The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.”
There is immense value in hard work, a lesson powerfully portrayed in the movie “The Ultimate Gift.” In this inspiring tale, a spoiled rich kid undergoes a remarkable transformation through a series of unexpected “gifts.” Among these gifts is the invaluable lesson of work. Initially, he tackles grunt work. Soon, his bank accounts and credit cards are stripped away. This forces him to earn his paycheck through sheer effort. It’s a grueling journey, yet these experiences gradually mold him into a brand-new person. Do you truly understand the essence of hard work? Are you eager to labor with your hands and face challenges head-on? Do you find yourself grumbling when confronted with tough tasks? Are you pouring your heart into your work, serving the Lord with fervor rather than just men? Work is a magnificent calling. We should embrace it wholeheartedly. Strive to give your utmost for the glory of the Lord.
they are busybodies
Becoming a busybody often springs from a natural tendency rooted in laziness. An idle person finds themselves with little to occupy their time, which paves the way for meddling in others’ affairs. But here’s a powerful truth: an idle mind truly becomes the devil’s playground! We are at risk when we find ourselves lounging at home with nothing to engage our thoughts. It makes us more susceptible to falling into temptation. One of the most effective ways to shield ourselves from these pitfalls is by immersing ourselves in serving the Lord. Imagine being deep in the act of sharing the gospel with someone. In that moment, the thought of committing a heinous act like bank robbery feels utterly foreign! Pursuing righteous endeavors is a formidable defense against temptation, and it’s a strategy we must seize with fervor.
earn the food they eat.
Eat their own bread. It doesn’t nullify the need for hospitality or generosity. Instead, it serves as a reminder. We should not be leeches, clinging to the successes and resources of others. We must contribute something meaningful ourselves. We should not take advantage of others. Avoid being schmoozers who ingratiate with false charm and flattery just to gain personal benefits. True kindness and generosity stem from genuine understanding. They come from respect for one another. We must recognize that our relationships thrive on mutual support. They do not thrive on parasitic interactions. Embracing this encourages us to foster a community where each person uplifts the other. This builds a network of trust and collaboration. It enriches our lives collectively.
never tire of doing what is good.
Do not grow weary of doing good! Each act of kindness is a powerful choice, and yesterday is just a stepping stone on this endless journey. There is no ceiling on the good you can unleash into the world! Remember, you are responsible for your own actions, not for the choices of others. So, channel your energy into what you need to accomplish. Move forward with determination. Overcome the obstacles that stand in your way!
