10 I rejoiced greatly in the Lord that at last you renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it.

Philippians 4:10

I rejoiced

Paul’s joy was not merely tied to the financial support he was set to receive. It surged from a deep happiness in witnessing their thriving spirit. He was touched by their generous hearts. His heart was filled with gratitude. He learned of the Philippians’ eagerness to share the abundant blessings God bestowed upon them.

you renewed your concern for me

The Philippians had generously supported Paul a decade ago during his time in Thessalonica (15-16). Now, their hearts once again burned with a desire to help. Paul reflects on their previous silence. He explains that they had not offered assistance in the meantime due to a lack of “opportunity.” Perhaps Paul had not returned to their region. Alternatively, they might have been constrained by other pressing financial burdens. Regardless, their eagerness to contribute once more underscores the deep bond they share with him.

Discussion Questions

• Why was Paul rejoicing?
• What does he mean that they had revived their concern for him?
• Why had there been a lull in their giving to Paul?
• Is that a good reason not to give?
