19 I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, that I also may be cheered when I receive news about you. 20 I have no one else like him, who will show genuine concern for your welfare. 21 For everyone looks out for their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. 22 But you know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father he has served with me in the work of the gospel. 23 I hope, therefore, to send him as soon as I see how things go with me. 24 And I am confident in the Lord that I myself will come soon.

25 But I think it is necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus, my brother, co-worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger, whom you sent to take care of my needs. 26 For he longs for all of you and is distressed because you heard he was ill. 27 Indeed he was ill, and almost died. But God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, to spare me sorrow upon sorrow. 28 Therefore I am all the more eager to send him, so that when you see him again you may be glad and I may have less anxiety. 29 So then, welcome him in the Lord with great joy, and honor people like him, 30 because he almost died for the work of Christ. He risked his life to make up for the help you yourselves could not give me.

Philippians 2:19-30

 Who was Timothy?

Timothy was not just a faithful disciple; he was an unwavering partner in Paul’s mission. Together, they traversed the Middle East, igniting flames of faith and establishing vibrant churches. Whenever Paul found himself unable to visit a congregation in person, he sent Timothy, his trusted envoy, in his stead. Timothy had earned this trust through his unwavering dedication. Paul couldn’t praise him enough: “I have no one like him who will be genuinely concerned for your welfare.” Unlike many, even those in ministry, Timothy was not swayed by ambition. He was not influenced by fame or financial gain. Timothy stood apart. His heart burned with a selfless love for those he served. This demonstrated that his focus was never on himself. It was solely on uplifting others.

From Timothy, we discover the profound significance of servant leadership. A true leader must passionately and humbly dedicate themselves to serving the flock. A minister of the gospel should embrace this sacred calling without seeking money, recognition, or any selfish motives. Their purpose should be purely to uplift and empower God’s people.

Who was Epaphroditus?

Epaphroditus was undeniably a devoted member of the Philippian church. He was courageously sent as a messenger to Paul. His noble purpose was to minister to him during his imprisonment. It is highly likely that he also brought a generous monetary gift. This was a profound testament of support for Paul’s vital ministry. Despite the scarce details we have about him, the words penned here reveal his remarkable character. He was a “fellow worker” and a “fellow soldier.” He embodied the spirit of true camaraderie. Paul highlights the extraordinary courage of this man. He states that Epaphroditus “risked his life” to reach him. He traversed perilous distances that were fraught with danger. Yet, to journey and offer help to a “criminal” whom many despised magnified the audacity of his mission. This made his act of love all the more extraordinary and perilous.

While visiting Paul, Epaphroditus came down with a sickness. His illness was severe, and he almost died. The Philippians were naturally very worried about their dear brother when they heard the news, so Paul decided to send him back to them.

Epaphroditus’ inspiring story powerfully reminds us that the kingdom of God thrives on a vibrant tapestry of diverse workers. Not everyone can be a Paul, and not everyone is called to take center stage. Within the beautiful body of Christ, a multitude of individuals possesses an array of gifts and unique callings. Think about how much less impactful Paul’s ministry would have been. He had the unwavering support of dedicated souls like Epaphroditus. They stood by him and encouraged him every step of the way!

For every dynamic pastor leading the charge, there exists a devoted community of believers laboring selflessly behind the scenes. Some passionately teach Sunday School, igniting young minds, while business-minded individuals generously offer their resources, enriching their communities. Prayer warriors resolutely devote their time to conquer spiritual battles on their knees, wielding the powerful weapon of intercession. Those blessed with the gift of hospitality warmly welcome others into their homes and lovingly prepare meals for the ailing. Indeed, there is a profound necessity for every unique gifting as we unite to build God’s glorious church!

Are you wholeheartedly dedicating yourself to serving the body of Christ and fervently building God’s kingdom? This week, I urge you to share a powerful way you can uplift others. Encourage those who are faithfully serving God, just as Epaphroditus did!

honor people like him

Churches must absolutely resist the temptation to “over-exalt” pastors, worship leaders, teachers, or any members of the congregation! Only Jesus deserves to be lifted high above all others. Just as the hand cannot claim superiority over the foot, let us remember that every believer’s role holds immense value. We must honor and respect those who serve in complementary roles. Servants like the remarkable Epaphroditus play a crucial part. Their contributions are vital to the body of Christ!
