The Importance of Every Gift in Ministry

12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, to build up the body of Christ, 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of God’s Son, growing into maturity with a stature measured by Christ’s fullness. 14 Then we will no longer be little children, tossed by the waves and blown around by every wind of teaching, by human cunning with cleverness in the techniques of deceit. 15 But speaking the truth in love, let us grow in every way into him who is the head—Christ. 16 From him the whole body, fitted and knit together by every supporting ligament, promotes the growth of the body for building itself up in love by the proper working of each individual part.

Ephesians 4:12-16

I heard a preacher once call some gifts: The who of the gifts – Who is doing the work?

Paul emphatically answers this critical question. The saints are not mere spectators. They are the dedicated ones actively engaged in the work of service! Each saint has a role to play. Each has a mission to fulfill. They should not be passive while pastors and teachers lead the charge. It is the pastor’s sacred duty to empower the saints. Pastors equip them to carry out their tasks. Pastors cheer them on every step of the way. Yet, tragically, in countless churches worldwide, a mere 10% of the congregation shoulders a staggering 90% of the work!

In numerous churches, it’s the passionate pastors who are compensated, granting them the invaluable gift of time for ministry. Yet, this does not imply they bear the weight of all responsibilities alone. The duty of the congregation extends far beyond merely providing an offering. This is absolutely essential! The tale of the widow’s mite is poignant. It shines a light on the profound truth that God cherishes every heartfelt gift. He appreciates gifts, regardless of size, when given with genuine generosity and love.

A pastor who tries to carry all the burdens alone risks burning out. He may fall into the dangerous trap of pride, thinking he stands above others. Parents nurture their children to share household chores. Similarly, church leaders must ignite the potential within their congregation. They empower them for ministry. Numerous opportunities abound for involvement. Regular members of the church have an array of unique gifts. Even the pastor or leaders may not possess these gifts.

In the inspiring narrative of Ezra and Nehemiah, the entire community rallied together with unwavering determination. They worked to rebuild the sacred temple. They also focused on reconstructing the mighty city walls. Each person poured their unique gifts into this monumental endeavor, uniting their strengths for a common purpose. Some may have tended to the cooking. They crafted delectable meals to nourish the workers. Others tirelessly cared for the animals. They worked hard to ensure their well-being. Even the older children surely embraced the call to action, lovingly assisting in child care. It was a heartwarming group effort, a true testament to the power of collaboration and shared passion!

So we rebuilt the wall until the entire wall was joined together up to half its height, for the people had the will to keep working.

Nehemiah 4:6

The people were filled with an unstoppable determination to work, and through their unwavering collaboration and unity, they achieved and extraordinary feat.

Paul’s ministry was a vibrant tapestry woven with the contributions of many. In every epistle, we witness the dynamic team he collaborated with, a testament to the power of unity. His impact was magnified by his commitment to equipping others, empowering them to carry the torch of his mission. Even in the confines of prison, he could no longer go forth himself. His dedicated companions were ready. They stepped up and continued the work with fervor and dedication.

God’s magnificent design calls every believer to step into the glorious task of serving the Lord! Each one of us is called to perform the “works of service.” We must avoid the trap of thinking, “I’m paying the pastor, so I can sit back and relax.” No! Every member of the church has a vital role to play. And to all the pastors out there, fear not the sharing of the spotlight! Embrace the opportunity to uplift others, for together we can accomplish incredible things!

That is not the model that God intended. It is unhealthy and will negatively impact the entire church. Here are several compelling reasons why a leader might take on too much themselves:

• He craves to be the shining star in every room, the heartbeat of every moment.
• He holds an unwavering belief that he can surpass everyone else in delivering excellence.
• Trust in others feels like a fragile whisper—he is reluctant to let go of the reins.
• Fear of relinquishing control gnaws at him, igniting a fierce determination to steer the ship himself.
• He feels an intense, burning need to unequivocally prove his worth, to validate every cent of his hard-earned paycheck.

Understand that I am not accusing every church leader of wrongdoing. Many are genuinely motivated by a heartfelt desire to serve, often taking on the bulk of the work themselves. Yet, there are those who remain unaware of the critical need to empower others for this mission. Even when they recognize this necessity, they may feel lost on how to achieve it.

A vibrant church understands the vital role each believer plays. Every believer contributes to the glorious mission of building God’s kingdom! Every role is essential. No part of the body can claim superiority. The eye cannot say to the foot, “I don’t need you.” So, what about you? Are you actively engaging in works of service? Are you wholeheartedly using your unique gifts within your local church? If not, it’s time for a change! This Sunday, don’t hesitate. Approach your leaders and ask how you can contribute. Choose a specific ministry to pour your heart into!

Share the profound insights you’ve gleaned from Ephesians. Challenge them to truly reflect on the impact of your potential contributions if they claim there’s no need. Church leaders might politely brush you off at first—don’t let that deter you! Embrace every opportunity they present with fervor and dedication; nothing is beneath you. As you immerse yourself in service, your unique talents and gifts will shine through. They will reveal the incredible purpose you have to fulfill!

The result of the speaking gifts – Verses 12-16 describe the purpose or mission of the evangelists, teachers, and shepherds:

  • Empowering the saints to passionately embrace their calling for the work of ministry!
  • Igniting the passion within, crafting a vibrant and powerful physique
  • Inspiring the saints to passionately pursue unity!
  • Igniting a fervent passion for knowledge
  • Vigilantly defending ourselves against deception and the insidious grip of false teachings!
  • Embracing profound spiritual maturity (so that you may rise above the immaturity of childhood)
  • Igniting the passion within believers to flourish and reach new heights of spiritual maturity!

The role of leaders in the church is absolutely vital! We must remember that merely increasing numbers and weekly offerings are not our ultimate goals. A truly vibrant church does not simply measure its health by how many pews are filled. No, a healthy church is one that is thriving and growing! It’s a place where people are nourished, equipped, and trained to harness their God-given gifts. The knowledge of the truth is not just increasing; it’s igniting a fire within! As we unite to build God’s kingdom, each person contributes a unique and essential role. Their involvement is part of the magnificent tapestry of ministry. This is not about a single superstar pastor receiving all the accolades. It focuses on a dynamic community of volunteers, lay brothers, and sisters. Together, they work hand in hand to bring the Gospel to life. What Paul is emphasizing here is the profound impact of true discipleship!

The leaders are fervent disciples who are diligently making more disciples by equipping and training them. These new disciples, ignited by their faith, are eagerly serving, helping, and multiplying their own disciples. This is the essence of what church truly embodies! It’s not about flashy media presentations. It’s not about celebrity-led services. It’s about ordinary individuals passionately pursuing a life like Jesus. They guide others to embark on that same transformative journey.

What is your spiritual gift? Many people enthusiastically attend conferences or eagerly fill out surveys, hoping to discover their spiritual gifts. Yet, the most powerful way to uncover these gifts is to dive into serving! Just like a stationary boat cannot chart a new course. Similarly, a believer who only sits in contemplation misses the chance to contribute to God’s kingdom. Once you take that courageous step to serve, you open yourself up to divine guidance. You also gain the wisdom of others. This makes it effortless to adjust your path. You embrace a role that perfectly aligns with your unique, God-given abilities. The adventure of discovery awaits you!

Reflective Questions

• What was His purpose in giving these gifts and calling them to work in the church?
• How are the saints equipped?
• Who is supposed to be doing the work of service?
• Should there be an audience/preacher division?
• Who has a job in the church?
• What is our job? How can we do it?
• What is the end goal for the believers in the church?
• If we achieve this goal, what is the result?
• Why would an immature believer be tossed here and there by every wind of doctrine?
• How can we avoid this dangerous situation?
• What kind of trickery do men use to mislead others?
• What do the words craftiness and scheming imply?
• How can both the unity and individuality of the members of God’s church be explained?
• Who makes the church grow?
