11 This is according to his eternal purpose accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Ephesians 3:11
God’s purposes are unwavering and eternal! As we’ve witnessed in this last chapter, this truth is not a novel concept. This realization should ignite a fire within us, fueling our confidence in the Lord and deepening our faith in Him. He is fully aware of His intentions and His plans are nothing short of perfection; He reigns supreme! Even when the world seems to be engulfed in chaos, we should remember God’s firm presence on His throne. He guides us with His mighty hand!
I am reminded of a couple verses in Isaiah that speak this:
10 I declare the end from the beginning,
and from long ago what is not yet done,
saying: my plan will take place,
and I will do all my will.
11 I call a bird of prey from the east,
a man for my purpose from a far country.
Yes, I have spoken; so I will also bring it about.
I have planned it; I will also do it.Isaiah 46:10-11
12 In him we have boldness and confident access through faith in him. 13 So, then, I ask you not to be discouraged over my afflictions on your behalf, for they are your glory.
Ephesians 3:11-13
Do not be discouraged
At the end of this section, Paul fervently urges the Ephesians not to lose heart. He has endured countless hardships for the gospel, yet his labor was not in vain; it was profoundly significant. God reigns supreme and has an incredible plan unfolding! Yes, he was imprisoned, but never did he look back with regret. He understood that this was a divine element of God’s grand design. When he faced trials, it was all for the sake of the Gentiles and their faith. Oh, it was absolutely worth every moment!
What is one trial you have faced recently? Looking back, what good aspects can you see that maybe you did not see at the time?
For us, we can also learn from Paul’s instruction in verse 13.
Don’t lose heart! If you or another believer are enduring countless trials, remember, don’t give in! These challenges are bestowed upon you by God, just as they were for Paul. Lift each other up with encouragement and hold steadfast in your faith! Our God is a benevolent and loving presence who deeply cares for us. Embrace the journey, no matter the trouble. Endure hardships for the sake of others and the gospel, for it is a noble cause. Resist the temptation to evade these struggles. Serve God passionately. If adversity comes your way, rejoice in the knowledge that He has deemed you worthy to suffer for His name!
Reflection Questions:
• Was this a new plan?
• How do you know?
• What does this tell us about God?
• How should this affect our attitude towards God?
