Courageously Serve

It does not matter to God if we are male or female, we are to be coworkers with Christ! In today’s scriptures we discover ways we can use the gifts that God has given us to serve others.

Yes, I also ask you, true partner, to help these women who have contended for the gospel at my side, along with Clement and the rest of my coworkers whose names are in the book of life.

Philippians 4:3

Peter tells us that God gives each of us specific gifts and talents we are to use in service to one another (1 Peter 4:10). We do not earn these gifts. They are an expression of the love God has for each of us. We do not get to choose our gifts; they are given to us by the Holy Spirit. They are given to equip us for service to build up the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:11; Ephesians 4:12).

Our counter world culture is constantly sending us the message that it is “all about me.” Being a servant is not an attribute many strive for. They want to be served but not serve. It is not a popular concept and it has zero glamour. It is a position that our friends, family, and coworkers are not going to try and take from us, because it has no meaningful title.

However it reveals the heart of our character. It reveals the root of our priorities. It is an attribute God generously blesses us for as He is blessing others through us.

Paul commends the women who have labored alongside him for the sake of the gospel. If you are familiar with the journey of Paul from start to finish, can you imagine being a woman sojourning with him? If was not a journey of glitter, butterflies and rainbows. Paul knew it was not easy for anyone, but he commended these women for their devotion to Christ in serving others. He called upon the Philippians to help these courageous women in honoring their work.

Jesus dd not come to be served, but to serve. He gave His life for all of us (Matthew 20:28). The least we can do is follow His lead. We must be willing to courageously serve others for the sake of His kingdom.

Be courageously willing to serve others by:

  • Identify Genuine Needs. Your family, workplace, community, and local church.
  • Pray. Pray over each need and ask God to reveal the one or ones He wants you to meet.
  • Plan. Determine the necessary steps you can take to help the need God has asked you to address.
  • Go. Take action and remain committed to the task until the need is met or God brings other workers.

We are to be fellow workers in God’s kingdom in the same way these women of Paul’s time were.

Ask God to reveal your specific area of kingdom work and dedicate yourself to that work.
