Everyday we put confidence in things we do not even think about.
The automatic coffee maker – we assume every morning we will wake up to hot coffee.
The key in the ignition of our car will start the engine and away we drive.
Walking into a room and turning the light switch on.
What about complex things?
Newton’s law of Motion.
Einstein’s Field Equation.
We simply trust that the laws of physics and go about our day without ever giving them a thought. Putting our trust in something is common practice to humans. From scientists to mathmagicians, engineers to architects, musicians and artists, doctors and nurses, teachers and coaches, and everyone in between all trust in something.
But what if there was something better than simply trusting in something?
What if there was another level of trust that provided even more benefits that the laws of physics?
The Prophet Jeremiah was continually trying to get the people of Israel to see God’s plan and know there was something more to just trusting. In today’s scripture, I like the RSV version.
Blessed is he who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord.
He will be like a tree planted by water:
it sends its roots out toward a stream,
it doesn’t fear when heat comes,
and its foliage remains green.
It will not worry in a year of drought
or cease producing fruit.Jeremiah 17:8
In the next verse, Jeremiah uses a compelling word picture to help us see what it looks like when our trust IS the Lord.
A tree. A tree planted by water and what does it say about the roots? They are planted deep. So when a flood comes, it remained. When a dry season came, it was dug deep to reach deeper waters. We never have to fear heat or drought. Our leaves will always be green and we will not fail to bear fruit.
What a difference when we from trusting the in the Lord to a place where our trust IS the Lord!
“Trust in” or “Trust IS”.
When our trust is the Lord, we have a relationship with Him that will penetrate every area of our lives. When our trust is the Lord, every decision will flow from the knowledge that He:
Has a plan for our lives.
He provides for every need
He cares for us
He loves us more than we can love ourselves
Imagine a life with less fear, worry and the ability to produce kingdom fruit.
Thoughts to Ponder:
- Can you say your trust IS the Lord?
- What can you do today to transition into that place of saying my confidence IS the Lord?
