Living Water.

For my people have committed a double evil:
They have abandoned me,
the fountain of living water,
and dug cisterns for themselves—
cracked cisterns that cannot hold water.

Jeremiah 2:13

Family is a noble cause, but is not the source of living water. A lot has changed in my life these past few years. I had grown to the point in life that I thought living water came from a dysfunctional marriage, 3 kids, a farm, a house in the mountains or my job. Over these past few years all of it is gone and all that remains is myself in that picture. The illusion of control has slipped away. My temptation is to look at the well-being of all those things and my source of life. If they were doing well, then I was well. If one of them was a train wreck, I was a wreck.

The reality is that we are all looking somewhere of our source of true life.

You may be looking at your job, a spouse, a bank account, or activities to satisfy and bring meaning to your life. All of these are gifts from heaven and just as quickly as they came, they can leave. Our health can be compromised, a child derailed, a relationship ends, and we can be left empty and alone. They were broken cisterns that could never hold any water.

Listen to what Jeremiah was telling the people: They abandoned God and found a new idol to worship.

Can you hear the pleading voice of Jeremiah? You have turned your back on God and committed two sins. They turned away from God and turned to someone or something else as their source of water. Only Jesus promises us water that springs up to eternal life. Only Jesus can satisfy our thirst.

Thoughts to Ponder:

  • Consider your relationship with God. Are you focused on Him as the priority relationship in your life? Or have you turned to someone or something else?
  • Have you experienced someone or something else letting you down?
  • Have you experienced God’s living water that brings complete peace and satisfaction?
  • What is God speaking to you today?
