The Thirst of My Soul

I have been going through a very difficult time in my life. I am not sure how this entire situation is going to turn out. I also don’t know what kind of ramifications it has for my future. The truth is, I have no control and I am scared. There have been many sleepless nights, but I hold onto God.

I have never held onto God like I have now. God’s Word is my lifeline. I continue to read, memorize, and chew on God’s Word over and over again. When I started this series, I remembered a scripture I read earlier this year. I was reading through the NT and remembered the description of Mary.

But Mary was treasuring up all these things in her heart and meditating on them.

Luke 2:19

Pondering this, I knew what it meant.

There is a huge difference between reading God’s Word for information and pondering the Word of God for the soul. Some days my soul is full and satisfied, but still, there were many boring days. No matter which day, I keep being persistent. Over time, I found what my heart was looking for. These longings started in my earliest childhood memories. I found a resting place for my soul.

IN today’s scripture, Paul had rushed through several cities in a short period of time. He was very busy working for the Lord, but there is one verse that stuck out to me:

The people here were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, since they received the word with eagerness and examined the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.

Acts 17:11

“Eagerness” is an action of the heart. It means motivation, anticipation, and a sense of excitement when approaching God’s Word. It was an attitude of “they wanted to”, not “they had to.” It was pure desire intent of their heart.

“Examine” is an action of the mind. It showed they did not like second hand information. They wanted to see for themselves. This sort of faith is deeply personal. They did not just trust and rely on Paul and those with him. No, they eagerly examined the scripture.

They did not just eagerly examine the moment. They did it daily. This reminds me of the Psalmist who wrote:

I thirst for God, the living God.
When can I come and appear before God?

Psalms 42:2

My friends, this is the real resting place for our souls. Seize the opportunity! Carve out space in your heart! Let all your thirst for God drive you to meet Him in a way you never expected.

  • DO you remember the last time your heart was eager to meet God?
  • How can you nurture it?
  • If time has passed, how can you spark that desire to have an intimate moment with Him again?
