Today we meet a man. This man has no name. We only know that he is a man and was lame from birth. He could not even make his way to the temple to beg for money. Reading this story, we get the impression that he had accepted his “fate.” When he encounters Peter and John, all that he asked was for money. It was just another day to him.
Do you ever wonder if he wished he could walk? I bet he did! As he grew up, I am willing to bet that he wished he could run and jump and play as the other kids. I bet he wished for legs to go to work and work an honorable job and live his own life, but there he sat. Resolved that all he would ever become was lame and all he had was begging.
Too much time had passed. The disability took a toll on his dignity. His bitterness had turned to numbness. In his mind, he was convinced that there was nothing he could do to ever walk. He had given up on himself, but you know who did not give up on him? God did not give up on him!
Can you imagine their conversation? Let us open a “reel” in our mind for a moment.
Man lame from birth: “Sirs, do you have any spare change?“
Two Strangers: “Nope! We don’t.“
Man lame from birth: “Gee, what a bad day.“
One Stranger: “However, I am going to give you everything I have. In the name of Jesus, stand up and walk.“
Man lame from birth: “Seriously? Leave me alone! I might be useless but I am not a fool. Stand up and walk? DO you not know …. wait ….“
I want us to draw a very important lesson here! We may not be struggling with physical challenges like this man, but some of us may struggle with issues that pose a significant obstacle in our lives. Some of these obstacles may be so deep seated, have been there for so long, that we have given up hope. We live with them as if it is the only “normal” we are ever going to know.
Perhaps you are right. Perhaps… God is inviting you to join Him in His miracles today. You may not be able to change your circumstances but you can change how you respond.
We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.
Romans 8:28
God can redeem even the worst of all situations for good!
You may have been dealing with it on your own all along, but perhaps God wants you to ask for help. You don’t need to deal with it alone! Today is not just another day! A new normal is possible.
Get up and walk!
Thoughts to Ponder:
What is the one “impossible” thing God seems to be nudging you to reconsider?
