We are taking a deeper look into the battle belonging to the Lord through the example of David vs. Goliath. When David spoke to Goliath on that fateful day, he shared three things before he killed him.
The first: what we see with earthly eyes is not all there is!
The Second: The Lord will give us what we need, as we look to Him as the true Conqueror.
“Today the Lord will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head…” 1 Samuel 17:46.
David was the one who shot the stone and one who killed Goliath with the sword when he fell. David cut off the giant’s head. Do we imagine that all of this came by whim?
33 But Saul replied, “You can’t go fight this Philistine. You’re just a youth, and he’s been a warrior since he was young.”
34 David answered Saul, “Your servant has been tending his father’s sheep. Whenever a lion or a bear came and carried off a lamb from the flock, 35 I went after it, struck it down, and rescued the lamb from its mouth. If it reared up against me, I would grab it by its fur, strike it down, and kill it. 36 Your servant has killed lions and bears; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living God.” 37 Then David said, “The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.”
Saul said to David, “Go, and may the Lord be with you.”
1 Samuel 17:34-37
David had gone to battle against a bear and lion. He was used to a protective stance. He was herdsman and kept watch over the sheep. It would not have been uncommon for David to encounter wild predators seeking sheep for dinner. It was custom for a herdsman to carry a rod. At the end were pieces of metal used to club something to death.
David’s father would not have put him in the wild by himself. David was not some scrawny teenager. David was skilled enough to defend the herd of sheep from predators. David was skilled with a sling shot. But most important, David loved the Lord.
But the Lord was the conqueror.
We must remember, as David did, that we are simply tools the Lord can use to fulfill His purposes. Like Moses, He can give us the words to speak. Like Gideon, He can equip us with the willingness to follow. Like Esther, He can fill us with unimaginable courage. The Lord’s power has no limits and His purposes will prevail, in spite of our weaknesses when we are willing to be used for His glory.
We do not fight for victory, but fight from victory!
Now we have this treasure in clay jars, so that this extraordinary power may be from God and not from us.
