Yesterday we looked at scripture about not getting ourselves wrapped up in anxiety over what is on the outside of us. That instead, when we pursue godliness we show beauty from our hearts and not the outside. Today we are going to look at contentment. Godliness influences contentment.
One of the marks of a Christ follower is contentment. When we are content we are operating by the Holy Spirit and not with the world’s standards of gain. Contentment is finding joy in what we have right now. There is nothing wrong with wanting more, but when we make the wanting more the solid focus, we shift our eyes from our Heavenly Father to the world.
Our relationship with money says a lot about our relationship with God. True godliness is putting our complete trust in God to provide for our needs while also being content with what he supplies.
Jesus spoke to us about this subject:
24 “No one can serve two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
Matthew 6:24-34
The Cure for Anxiety
25 “Therefore I tell you: Don’t worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26 Consider the birds of the sky: They don’t sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth more than they? 27 Can any of you add one moment to his life span by worrying? 28 And why do you worry about clothes? Observe how the wildflowers of the field grow: They don’t labor or spin thread. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was adorned like one of these. 30 If that’s how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and thrown into the furnace tomorrow, won’t he do much more for you—you of little faith? 31 So don’t worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you. 34 Therefore don’t worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
These scriptures are among my favorites. Jesus says, do not worry about anything! Look at what God is already doing and if He is faithful in the small, just how much more faithful is He to take care of us!
When we have faith in God’s presence and provision, we will experience peace of knowing we have all we need!
11 I don’t say this out of need, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I find myself. 12 I know how to make do with little, and I know how to make do with a lot. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being content—whether well fed or hungry, whether in abundance or in need. 13 I am able to do all things through him who strengthens me.
Philippians 4:11-13
Paul says, I am able to do ALL THINGS through Christ who strengthens me!
Be happy with a little, be happy with a lot! Whatever we do be thankful and rejoice that our Heavenly Father is not a father who can be charged with neglect or abandonment of His children!
Being satisfied with what we have is one of the marks of the Holy Spirit’s work in our lives.
