Psalms 19 starts out with creation declaring the glory of God God reveals Himself in all He has created.
1 The heavens declare the glory of God,
Psalm 19:1
and the expanse proclaims the work of his hands.
Some of us can testify to experiencing and seeing some of God’s greatest work here on earth. From the mountain tops to the middle of desserts we can see the splendor and glory of God. As we reflect upon a world that we can see creation shouting the glory of God, the goodness of God and the wonder of God, we then jump to verse 7.
The Psalmist shifts this whole psalm to say greater than God’s revelation of himself in the world is God’s revelation of Himself is His Word.
We can pause and ponder: What is your level of appreciation for God’s Word? Is it new? Is it a treasure in your heart? Is it a duty and a chore? A when I get time or something you can not go about your day with?
God asks us for His power of His Word in our lives.
The instruction of the Lord is perfect,
Psalm 19:7-11
renewing one’s life;
the testimony of the Lord is trustworthy,
making the inexperienced wise.
8 The precepts of the Lord are right,
making the heart glad;
the command of the Lord is radiant,
making the eyes light up.
9 The fear of the Lord is pure,
enduring forever;
the ordinances of the Lord are reliable
and altogether righteous.
10 They are more desirable than gold—
than an abundance of pure gold;
and sweeter than honey
dripping from a honeycomb.
11 In addition, your servant is warned by them,
and in keeping them there is an abundant reward.
The Psalmist describes the power of God’s Word in our lives:
Perfect and Trustworthy (vs 7): The Hebrew word for perfect here is tāmîm and means complete, whole, entire, sound. God’s Word is complete. It renews our lives and brings completeness to our lives. The Hebrew word for trustworthy here is ‘āman and means to stand firm, to trust, to be certain, to believe in. We can have confidence that when we put our complete trust in His Word we will mature spiritually. His Word brings complete and trustworthy wisdom.
Right and Pure (vs 8): The Hebrew word for right here is yāšār and means straight, upright, correct, right. God’s Word is correct and correcting. It brings purity to our hearts. The Hebrew word of pure is bar and means pure, clear, sincere. God’s Word is a light into our hearts and points our our impurity to refine us to become completed in Him.
Pure and Reliable (vs 9): The Hebrew word for pure is different than the verse before. This verse is ṭâôr and means pure, clean (morally, ethically). The Hebrew word for reliable is ‘ĕmeṯ and means truth. Our reverence, or our fear of the Lord, cleanses us. Through having a complete reverence of His Word, we submit and testify that His Word is absolute truth. There is no truth on this earth. The only truth is from the Word of God. God’s Word has and will endure forever. His Word is the same word spoken in the Garden of Eden and printed today. IT is the only righteousness in an unrighteous world.
Treasure (vs 10): If we want to be the riches people in the earth, we value HIs Word as more desirable than gold. HIs Word brings greater abundance than gold. His Word is more sweeter than the purest honey. God’s Word is invaluable. You can not put measure the value of it in your heart.
Think about the answer to the pondering prompt.
No matter where you are in this moment, are you willing to take a bold step toward putting more time into the Word of God? To allow a few extra minutes of your day to sit in His presence and allow Him to open your heart and eyes to complete and trustworthy instruction and wisdom?
Our theme this month is God’s Mercy is new each day. Each day we have an opportunity to sit with our Heavenly Father and read His instructions for our lives. His commands and precepts are made for us to live abundantly. He wants us to have whole completed lives and His Word is our instruction manual. His Mercy is speaking to us, but only if we are willing and desire the treasures of His Word.
