Restore the joy of your salvation to me, and sustain me by giving me a willing spirit.
Psalm 51:12
We covered most of this Psalm is a previous post: Restoration.
This is a psalm of David. He is asking God to restore the joy of salvation. He had committed some pretty serious sin that had separated himself from God.
Are you at the same place as David? Have you lost your joy and feel like you are in a joyless state day to day? Does God seem far away? God Wilmer you right where you are and reconnect with you joy! David guides us in how to find that joy with God again.
David is praying for repentance for the mistakes he has made that separated him from God and made life difficult for him to experience the joy he had before.
David wanted to regain that joy and is expressing that he wants a renewed commitment to obey God because he knows that following with a willing spirit will sustain him through any circumstance.
Joy is based on our relationship with God. We are not talking about quick moments of happiness. Happiness is a fickle feeling based on circumstance. Joy comes no matter what the circumstance is. David is acknowledging that joy is connected to a saving relationship with God.
David was joyless because his sin was leading him further from God. He committed adultery and had a man killed in battle. David was confronted and had two choices, keep running in sin or turn around and move closer to God. He confesses his sin and asks God for restoration and forgiveness.
“Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. Turn your face away from my sins and blot out all my guilt. God, create a clean heart for me and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not banish me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore the joy of your salvation to me, and sustain me by giving me a willing spirit.”
Psalms 51:8-12
This scripture is not taking about a renewed salvation. David is asking for the joy in salvation God gives us to to be returned. We lose out joy when we distance ourselves from him. The good news is that God’s mercy is made new each day!
God is always here for us and patiently waiting for us to choose to stop running and just turn around to move closer to him. We can ask God to restore our connection to Him. When we are restored, we can enjoy life because His presence is with us each day.
