I was sitting one afternoon absorbing the sunlight and pondering a question: Do I truly understand the mercy of God? DO I have an appreciation for God has done so that I might have eternal life?
Everything about us is not what we do, but the work of the Holy Spirit in us. It is God who seeks us and calls us, not us seeking Him. He loved us first before we even had an inkling to seek Him. God’s mercy regenerates our lives and renews us.
The word mercy here was translated from the Greek word eleos and means mercy: kindness or good will towards the miserable and the afflicted, joined with a desire to help them. God desires to be our helper. He renews us daily by a daily washing of regeneration.
That phrase of regeneration is the Greek word palingenesia and it means: new birth, reproduction, renewal, recreation, regeneration. Strongs gives the definition: spiritual renovation. I do not know about you, but do you not feel every morning you could use a spiritual renovation? To rise up each day and be cleansed by a renewal in you heart? God promises that His mercy is new each day by promising a cleansing washing of regeneration. It means yesterday has been washed away and today is a new day.
I pondered those two questions because I am not sure I can ever fully wrap my mind around the mercy of God. Daily I fall, but daily He forgives. Daily I dirty my clothes, but daily He gives me a spiritual bathing. We can not cleanse ourselves, it is He that cleanses us through the Holy Spirit.
Do we take for granted God will forgive us, or do we have enough understanding of how wonderful the gift and blessing of mercy is? No matter the day before, God is faithful to renew us! To restore us!
