Long before the angel ever visited Mary, Isaiah prophesized of a baby born from a virgin. A first glance, this seems like a strange detail in the Christmas story, but it is an important detail. Did Jesus have to be born from a virgin?
YES!
The prophecy and fulfillment of a virgin birth mattered because it reveals who this Jesus will be. On that morning, Mary would hold in her hands the God of the heavens wrapped in human flesh. Jesus could not come from a man and a woman. The moment we are conceived we are born with the stain of sin. The name “Immanuel” means “God with us.” That is who Jesus is.
Jesus would not just be an important prophet or religious figure in history. He became the glorious and magnificent God who would dwell with man. Sin is infectious and we are born with our sinful nature that is inherited from one generation to another. Jesus could not come in that ordinary way.
God used a supernatural conception to send His Son into the world. In doing this, He avoided the stain of sin. This gave Jesus the ability to live a perfect life on our behalf so that whoever calls upon the name of Jesus and receives Him, could trade their filthy rags for His righteousness. The God-man Jesus is born of the virgin Mary that Christmas morning.
