The Promise

When we open up God’s Word in Genesis we read through the amazing story of creation. God built a perfect place for Adam and Eve to dwell in. God has created all of the heavens, the earth and mankind. The land, the sea, and the birds are all apart of this creation. On the sixth day he created something unique to all of it. He created mankind. He did not just create man, He gave man a unique likeness, He created man in His own image. For a brief time, everything is perfect. They live in God’s presence and perfection.

But trouble comes. Adam and Eve listen to the lies of satan and rebel against God. Before their rebellion, there was a whole happy relationship between them and God. Now a deep and wide chasm exists between a holy God and an unrighteous people. How can this chasm be closed? Is there a possible way to cross it to be returned to God?

God speaks to satan and says:

I will put hostility between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and her offspring.
He will strike your head,
and you will strike his heel.

Genesis 3:15

One day there will be a son born that crushes your head, even if you manage to strike his foot on the way down and that son is Jesus!

This is the first mention of Christmas in the Word of God. Satan may think he had won at this point, but ultimately he will be defeated. Jesus is coming to destroy the power of Satan and completely restore the relationship between God and his people.

As quickly as the the problem came, God made a way!

How does this passage help shape your view of the significance of Christmas?
