Knowing God

In order for God to transform You and I, we need to know Him. We can not simply know ABOUT Him, but really know Him personally. Many of us only know about Him. It is like knowing a really famous person. You can google a bunch of information and know about them, but we do not know them personally.

We can develop a personal relationship with God in the same way develop any personal relationship in our lives. We spend time getting to know Him.

We can READ His Word
We can speak to Him in PRAYER
We can HANG OUT with His family

God’s Word

God’s Word is so important to our lives! The entire Bible is a love letter to us from Him. God inspired more than 40 people and over 1000 years to capture everything He wanted us to know about Him. If you think about it, God’s Word is the ultimate manuel to who He is. You do not have to guess, He reveals His character to us in His Word. Man, don’t we wish we had this same manuel for all our relationships!

There is an amazing agreement among all the authors of the Bible that reflects the character of God through particular historical and cultural lenses. All 66 books of the Bible tell one sweeping story of how God loves us so much and wants to restore His relationship with us.

Paul wrote to Timothy:

15 and you know that from infancy you have known the sacred Scriptures, which are able to give you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:15-17

We need to internalize the Word of God in our hearts, not just gather facts about God. There are many ways to memorize and write God’s Word on our hearts:

Write a verse on a card or dry erase marker on a mirror.

Meditate, ponder, think about the verse throughout your day.

Create a verse image on an app like the YouVersion and make it your home screen or computer background for a week. Everytime you look at your phone or computer speak the verse outloud.

12 For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 No creature is hidden from him, but all things are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give an account. Hebrews 4:12-13

12 Now we have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who comes from God, so that we may understand what has been freely given to us by God. 13 We also speak these things, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual things to spiritual people. 1 Corinthians 2:12-13

Prayer

It would be a strange relationship if we never talked to our best friend. Prayer is an intimate conversation with the creator of the universe. Our Creator wants to be involved in every minute detail of our lives. We pray for our needs, but we should also be expectantly listening to Him to speak to our hearts or to reveal something new to us.

Listen to my words, Lord;
consider my sighing.

Pay attention to the sound of my cry,
my King and my God,
for I pray to you.

3 In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice;
in the morning I plead my case to you and watch expectantly
.
Psalms 5:1-3

Then I acknowledged my sin to you
and did not conceal my iniquity.
I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,”
and you forgave the guilt of my sin.Selah

Fellowship

We walk out our relationship with God by being in relationships with others. It is imperative to have a support system of believers to encourage, pray together, and give insights to scripture and to share experiences.

Therefore let everyone who is faithful pray to you immediately.[a]
When great floodwaters come,
they will not reach him.

You are my hiding place;
you protect me from trouble.
You surround me with joyful shouts of deliverance.Selah

8 I will instruct you and show you the way to go;
with my eye on you, I will give counsel.

Psalms 32:5-8

24 And let us consider one another in order to provoke love and good works, 25 not neglecting to gather together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day approaching. Hebrews 10:24-25
