What we believe governs our lives and choices. Our belief is the foundation from which we form our opinions and make decisions. For those who have received Christ, it is essential to know what we believe and why we believe it. Most people inherit their convictions from their parents and just absorb those ideas without truly understanding them or investigating them.
If we want certainty and accuracy, we must base our belief on the Word of God and not habit, culture, or family heritage. A belief system is like a mental grid through which the outside information coming in must pass. If we build our mental system on the truth of the Word of God, we are able through the Holy Spirit to detect false doctrine and philosophy.
False doctrine is mixed up with just enough truth to make it sound good. This is Satan at his core. This is how he works in us. He gives us just enough truth but it is crammed with lies. If we do not have that solid rock foundation, our faith in the one true God, we are easily led astray by doctrines that are genuinely too good to be true. These doctrines support an agenda (Satan’s agenda) that is inconsistent with God’s Word because it offers a license for one to live according to fleshly desire.
“Hold on to the pattern of sound teaching that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.”
2 Timothy 1:13 CSB
Believers should know their convictions so that they can present their beliefs to others. It is the work of the Holy Spirit to bring the lost to Christ, Gods may choose us to instruct unbelievers in the ways of truth.
“For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, will multiply teachers for themselves because they have an itch to hear what they want to hear.”
2 Timothy 4:3 CSB
Our world is full of people who are desperate, lonely, and hurting. They yearn for the amazing hope that Christians have. They have a desire for a real hope, and not someone’s opinion. The devil takes advantage of this desire and has many false doctrines and philosophies to sweep people off the path.
Our world is permeated with godless ideas and philosophies. Their ultimate agenda and goal is to destroy us or get us to conform and compromise the Word of God. If we base our belief system off the Word of God, we can recognize these deceitful teachings when we hear it and address real need with real answers.
