Brokenness is the requirement for maximum usefulness by God.
Who do you love more than God?
Who do you trust more than God?
What is God stripping away from your life?
The answers to these questions many be the explanation for why God is working so hard to break your dependence on the answers and anything other than Him. No matter how long it takes or how difficult the process, He’s committed the bringing each of us to a place of spiritual wholeness and maturity.
“For those he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.”
Romans 8:29 CSB
God is working to transform us to the likeness of His son Christ Jesus. As He does this, He can work through us and bring others to the wholeness and spiritual maturity through our own individual testimonies.
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort. He comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any kind of affliction, through the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ overflow to us, so also through Christ our comfort overflows. If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation. If we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings that we suffer. And our hope for you is firm, because we know that as you share in the sufferings, so you will also share in the comfort.”
2 Corinthians 1:3-7 CSB
We he apostle Paul faced a time of brokenness. He wrote:
“Concerning this, I pleaded with the Lord three times that it would leave me.”
2 Corinthians 12:8 CSB
Although God did not remove “it,” He gave Paul help to understand it was given to him to keep him from exhausting himself above others. He gave this “thing” to Paul to keep him from relying on himself.
“especially because of the extraordinary revelations. Therefore, so that I would not exalt myself, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to torment me so that I would not exalt myself. Concerning this, I pleaded with the Lord three times that it would leave me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is perfected in weakness.” Therefore, I will most gladly boast all the more about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may reside in me. So I take pleasure in weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and in difficulties, for the sake of Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong. I have been a fool; you forced it on me. You ought to have commended me, since I am not in any way inferior to those “super-apostles,” even though I am nothing.”
2 Corinthians 12:7-11 CSB
God taught Paul and teaches us through Paul’s experience that His grace would always be sufficient for his weaknesses and ours!
Whenever we experience brokenness, God’s grace can sustain and and mature us. God will show us how to relinquish our reliance on earthly forms of security and teach us how to rest in His perfect provision and love. We can be confident that Christ can take our weaknesses and turn them into strength, hope, and honor.
Brokenness is the pathway to God because staying broken, is not enduring suffering and pain. Brokenness does not mean suffering mental health issues. Brokenness is humility that makes us a servant of Christ. It puts our complete freewill choice to choose to serve a Christ and only Christ. To be completely dependent upon him and not ourselves or anyone else. It is the quality of meekness. can do whatever we want, but through humility we choose meekness to serve Christ.
“Therefore, this is what the Lord says: If you return, I will take you back; you will stand in my presence. And if you speak noble words, rather than worthless ones, you will be my spokesman. It is they who must return to you; you must not return to them.”
Jeremiah 15:19 CSB
