Listening is an essential key to walking with God.
One of the most important parts of our discipleship journey is to learn to listen to God. We live complex and often hectic lives and there’s nothing more important, necessary, and rewarding than to hear what God has to say to us and obeying it.
Does God speak to us? The Word of God assures us that He does. The book of Hebrews opens with:
“Long ago God spoke to our ancestors by the prophets at different times and in different ways. In these last days, he has spoken to us by his Son. God has appointed him heir of all things and made the universe through him.”
Hebrews 1:1-2 CSB
Our God is not silent. He is alive and actively speaking to us today. He speaks to us in an individual way that we can hear Him, receive His message, and obey Him. God is infinite. He is fully capable of communicating with us! You do not have to be in the right place at the right time, and thankfully so because we would never be in the right place at the right time. Right where you are at this moment, in the midst of circumstance He desires to speak with you in a personal way.
I believe this is the most important components to having a relationship – any relationship. Listening. We learn to listen to others by the way we learn to listen to God. when the Lord speaks, He is speaking to you. The Word of God contains His truth and we must take it personally.
Allow the Holy Spirit to open your heart to hearing the Word of God. This opens the door to a deeper understanding of scripture and that deeper understanding leads to claiming His truth. When we have a deeper understand of His love, grace, and mercy, His promises begin to be worked into your lives.
God is serious about our relationship with Him. He speaks to us for our own benefit. It is vital to listening and obeying. God may speak to a hidden sin, and wrong behavior, false teaching, or a wronged relationship. He leads us into examining ourselves and introspection so that He can transform our lives to mirror the life of Christ.
He does this by challenging us to change certain unhealthy feelings and opinions. Sometimes he will command us to change certain unhealthy aspects of our behavior. With every instruction, we can be certain that it is for our own good. His desire is to encourage us to transform our likeness into the likeness of His Son Jesus Christ. This leads to living the very best version of you that you can ever be.
God rewards us with an abundant life when we learn to listen and obey. When we pay close attention to His Word, He promises:
“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and incomprehensible things you do not know.”
Jeremiah 33:3 CSB
