I’ve written about the natural man, the carnal man, and now for the third description of man: the spiritual man. It should be the goal of every Christian to grow and mature and move beyond being babies in Christ.
15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. 1 Corinthians 2:15
A spiritual man does what is supernatural, unlike the natural man who just does what is natural self does.
11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 1 Corinthians 2:11-12
A spiritual man is born twice. He was born physically, but was spiritually dead. When he accepts and received Christ as his savior, he is then born again, spiritually. He is now a new creature and creation and is no longer spiritually dead. The spiritual man lives by the Spirit. He has received the Spirit of God. Salvation is not about getting man out of earth and into heaven, it is about getting God out of heaven and into man.
Christians are not natural people who just decide to do batter. Christians have been radically, dramatically, and supernaturally changed by something called a new a new birth. He has received Christ and God has move in and inhabits his humanity. Some people look at Christianity as a tadpole becoming a frog. They think it is a gradual change in their lives. They go to church to learn to be the frog they think they should be. A Christian is not a tadpole. A Christian is a frog that becomes a prince by the kiss of grace.
It is a miracle! It’s not a gradual change, it’s becoming something we can never be without the fullness of God dwelling within us. It’s not about becoming better or having a better nature, it’s about letting your nature be dramatically changed by the dwelling of the Spirit of God in your heart.
A spiritual Christian learns from the Spirit.
12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 1 Corinthians 2:12
When we receive the Spirit we receive spiritual knowledge from our Heavenly Father. God illuminates us through the Spirit. A natural man can not have spiritual understanding because he does not have the Spirit of God in him. A carnal man has the Spirit but refuses to yield his life to God.
The Holy Spirit is the the tuner in our internal radio. He receives the transmission from God and reveals it to us. He illuminates truth from God’s word!
A spiritual Christian is liberated through the Spirit.
15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. 1 Corinthians 2:15
One of the greatest marks of spiritual maturity is being liberated. This liberation is an inward discernment. Instead of living according to the value system of the world, a spiritual person begins to live according to God’s values. He makes decisions based off of moral and spiritual judgement based on the Word of God and the Holy Spirit. A spiritual man HAS the mind of Christ within him. He never has to ask, what would Jesus do? Instead, he already knows because he can see and hear through the Holy Spirit. Just as Jesus had all of the spirit of God dwelling within him, guiding him, teaching him, and leading him, we have that same spirit dwelling within us.
A spiritual man is no longer concerned or captivated by the world. Instead, a spiritual man can see right through it. Spiritual men are not bound to the material world. There is no vain effort in seeking to fill the loneliness, emptiness or purposeful living, because the Spirit fills those whole in your heart.
A spiritual man has no problem sacrificing their time, effort or energy to spend time with his Heavenly Father. He seeks and enjoys his time in prayer, reading and studying God’s Word, and giving of his time and resources.
Have you taken that step of faith to choose to move beyond being a babe in Christ, to discipleship and walking the long journey of spiritual maturity? What prevents you from becoming all that God wants to make you?
