And Joshua said unto the people, Sanctify yourselves: for to morrow the Lord will do wonders among you. Joshua 3:5
The people had one thing standing between them and the promise land. The river Jordan. It was a major problem. It has been said at the time these people reached the Jordan, it was at its highest running. Men, women, children, and belongings all had to get across that river. These people needed a miracle. They needed the impossible to become possible.
God specializes in making the impossible possible. He had delivered me from the very grips of evil. He had given me the strength, power, courage and wisdom to overcome fear. He revealed his promises and showed me many times that he is God. The almighty God who calls me his daughter. Who loves me like no other and has purpose for me. It might not seem impossible to you, but to me, being in that place with God, was impossible. I never thought I’d ever understand all these things he was showing and revealing to me.
God shows us wonders everyday. The translated word here is miracle. I don’t understand everything that has happen in my past. I don’t need to. If I could explain it all at once, then I could explain God. I can’t explain God, I can only admit that he’s in control over everything.
God was preforming a miracle in my life, and his purpose was to bring me to a new place. Not a physical place, but a new spiritual place, in deep waters, where my love, trust belief, and understanding would increase. However, there were rivers to cross along the way.
This place we were walking in was new to me. My heart had been cleansed and evil kicked out. Some days it was hard because when your mind is so broken everything is just chaos. I hadn’t known a single day without anxiety. I hadn’t known a single moment of peace. I could breath here. I woke up every morning with a heart of thanksgiving and a hunger to keep seeking. Sure, everything was still in ruin. The darkness was growing darker, but I knew I was on the right path. Jesus had become my staff that I leaned upon. He illuminated every step.
The day the people crossed the Jordan, God preformed a great miracle. He held back the waters of the river so they all could cross safely on dry land. They didn’t know where they were going. They had never wandered this way, but each person put their trust in the Lord God. Every time God steps in, he performs a miracle.
And Joshua said, Hereby ye shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Hivites, and the Perizzites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Jebusites Joshua 3:10
What an amazing repeat of a promise God speaks over and over to us. You will know I am with you. God gives us his comfort to know that there is a land of opportunity and a river of difficulty to cross. Just as God saw them through the river, he would see them through all the difficulties that lay ahead. He established this principle. He is with us!
No matter what opposition I face, what river I cross, God is with me.
This very spot that the people crossed is the same spot John the Baptist, baptized Jesus. The picture we are given is a picture of Christ. The Ark of the Covenant was a picture of Jesus Christ. As the ark went down into the river and rose up on the other side. This was the death burial and resurrection of Jesus. That river represented death. Jor Dan means judgement. The river is literally called River of Death.
I have had many rivers to cross this last year. All of these rivers were the testing of my faith. Oh the testing of our faith. Walking into this new place God had been preparing me all along, I just couldn’t see it. This new place didn’t make life easier, it just made God more real than ever.
